Name: Dr. Doug Whiteside

Dr. Doug Whiteside is an Associate Professor of Conservation Medicine at the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Senior Veterinarian at the Calgary Zoo.  He has had the privilege of working with hundreds of different bird species (many of which are threatened by extinction) and is an avian taxon advisory group veterinarian for North America’s Association of Zoos and Aquariums.  Dr. Whiteside earned his DVM from the Ontario Veterinary College (University of Guelph).  After two years in mixed animal practice, he then completed a zoo medicine internship at the Louisville Zoo.  This was followed by a zoo and wildlife medicine and pathology residency at the Toronto Zoo while concurrently completing a Doctorate in Veterinary Science (DVSc) in Pathobiology from the University of Guelph.

Dr. Whiteside is a Diplomate of the American College of Zoological Medicine and the European College of Zoological Medicine (Zoo Health Management).  
He is a strong advocate for animal welfare, is active on several national and international committees, and enjoys the clinical, teaching, and research challenges afforded to him by his current positions.
