This 2-hour webinar has been developed to provide veterinarians with key insights on rabies and rabies vaccination. The presentation includes a brief overview of the public health impact of rabies, the WHO’s “Zero by 30” initiative, and how the global increase in dog rabies is impacting the risk of human and animal exposures in North America (In September, the Centers for Disease Control issued a Rabies Health Advisory for the US due to a dramatic increase in rabies exposure among humans). On a national scale, this presentation highlights recent rabies surveillance findings in Canada, the US, and, specifically, Alberta. Human and animal exposure to rabies will be addressed as well as current regulations impacting the movement of dog/cats into and out of Canada. The presentation will also address the selection and use of companion animal rabies vaccine in Canada, which now centers around the availability of 3 distinct vaccine types (technologies): killed (inactivated); recombinant (feline); and RNA-Particle rabies vaccines.

Speaker Biography:
Dr. Richard Ford is Emeritus Professor of Medicine in the College of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University.
He is Board Certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and is an honorary Diplomate in the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine.
Dr. Ford is a Past President of the North American Veterinary Conference and continues his role as a member of the scientific program committee for that Conference.
He is a co-author on both the AAHA Canine Vaccine Guidelines and the AAFP Feline Vaccine Guidelines.
Outside of veterinary medicine, Dr. Ford spent 28 years with the US Air Force as a Biomedical Scientist. Dr. Ford retired from the USAF Reserve as a Brigadier General, where he was assigned to the Office of the Air Force Surgeon General at the Pentagon.
Speaker Biography:
Maureen Anderson is a graduate of the Ontario Veterinary College and is ACVIM board-certified in large animal internal medicine. Her graduate and post-graduate work had a strong focus on infectious disease control and zoonotic diseases in particular.
She is currently Lead Veterinarian - Animal Health and Welfare at the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness, where she continues to work in areas bridging animal and public health, including rabies and antimicrobial stewardship, and co-leads the companion animal Ontario Animal Health Network (OAHN).

Hollyn Maloney is the Public Health Veterinarian with the Government of Alberta. She works directly with the Departments of Agriculture and Irrigation and Primary and Preventative Health Services. Her focus is on zoonotic disease management, including managing the Alberta Rabies Program.
