Clinical parasitology: emerging issues? *RECORDING*
Wed, Jun 15, 2022

Agenda: Recording of Apr 27/22 live Zoom session

Expires June 15/22

Topics:

Echinococcus multilocularis: an emerging threat to dogs and people in Canada?

Prior to 2009, Echinococcus multilocularis had not been diagnosed in a dog in Canada. However, subsequently, multiple cases of alveolar echinococcosis have been diagnosed in dogs across Canada, particularly in Alberta. This talk will provide a summary of these cases and the human cases that have been reported over the same time period. Strategies to reduce the risk of infection in dogs and people will be discussed.

New issues in parasites of dogs: should they influence the parasite control programs we recommend for dogs?

Over the last 10 years, drug resistance has been described in hookworm, heartworm and tapeworm infections in dogs in North America. This talk will review current information about this resistance and how such infections should be managed. In addition, there will be a discussion on how concerns about drug resistance and Echinococcus multilocularis should influence the design of parasite control programs for dogs; is a risk-based approach to parasite control the appropriate way forward?
