Guest speaker presentation title: "Where There Are No Roads and No Vets: Improving Access to Veterinary Care in Canada’s Far North"

Guest speaker presentation description: The veterinary shortage across Canada has been gaining awareness over the recent years. Unfortunately, lack of veterinarians and limited access to veterinary care has always been a reality in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. With a total population of over 80,000 residents - which is divided into 58 communities, with the majority of these being fly-in only - there are only 3 local veterinarians all of whom are located in Yellowknife, the capital of Northwest Territories. This leaves the remaining communities without regular access to veterinary care. Lack of access to veterinary services negatively affects human, animal, and environmental health, for example, community safety issues and potential increased rabies transmission between humans, dogs, and wildlife. To address these issues, Veterinarians Without Borders (VWB) North America’s Northern Animal Health Initiative (NAHI) delivers programming in collaboration with communities to increase access to veterinary services in Northwest Territories and Nunavut, Canada. Programming focuses on strengthening community capacity and One Health in these regions through interventions such as veterinary clinics, telehealth services, and Community Animal Health Worker training, alongside knowledge sharing and community engagement initiatives. Come learn about how VWB North America’s NAHI program is changing the lives of many animals across Canada’s North!

Sun Nov 23/25 Updates in Dermatology - Day 1 of 2 (ZOOM)

Agenda: Online live via. Zoom only (no in-person option but will be recorded)

Day 1 of 2 (Nov 23/25): Cutaneous and otic infection diagnosis and management in veterinary dermatology. Cutaneous and otic infections in our dermatology patients can be frustrating to manage. Cytology is a quick, inexpensive and non-invasive diagnostic test to determine whether patients have secondary infections. Knowing how to take samples and being confident interpreting these samples is critical to an animal’s disease management and health. For these reasons, cytology should be part of the minimum database for any patient being seen for a “skin or ear problem”. Antimicrobial resistance continues to be of growing concern in both veterinary and human medicine. During this session we will review the newly published guidelines for the treatment for bacterial pyoderma (both susceptible and resistant) as well as how to diagnose resistant infections. We will also discuss treatment of infectious otitis externa as well as reviewing all the factors contributing to otitis development and ways to better manage those difficult otitis cases in the clinic.

Day 2 of 2 is on Nov 30/25

Day 2 of 2 (Nov 30/25): To itch or not to itch? Managing allergic dermatitis. Companion animals with allergic skin disease make up a large portion of your patients in general practice. With the chronic nature of this disease process, there are many ups and downs leading clients to become frustrated. During this session we will review the different types of allergies, pathophysiology, clinical signs as well as the diagnostic work-up. We will then focus on treatment and management of both food and environmental allergies. We will also cover some helpful tips to keep on track and set realistic expectations for your clients.
