As a Veterinarian, you will be responsible for the health and welfare of all animals impounded at the Animal Services Centre under the Responsible Pet Ownership (RPO) Bylaw as well as animals admitted under the No-Cost Spay/Neuter program. You will educate and represent Animal Services to the public, media, students, Alberta Veterinary Medical Association (ABVMA), Calgary Academy Veterinary Medicine (CAVM) and other agencies. Primary duties include:
- Conduct surgeries (for example: spay and neuters, umbilical hernias, cherry eye, wound repairs, and amputations).
- Perform dental procedures and diagnostics on shelter animals.
- Provide examinations and spays or neuters for the No Cost Spay Neuter Program, as well as examinations for impounded animals.
- Authorize medical treatments or euthanization of injured stray animals as per RPO.
- Review, approve, and perform all necessary humane euthanasia’s in accordance with established protocol.
- Serve as an appointed Clinical Instructor in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine’s Distributed Veterinary Learning Community. Instruct, supervise, mentor, and coach 4th year veterinary students participating in rotations in spay, neuter, dental procedures, physical exams, and basic principles of shelter medicine.
- A Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine combined with a current license to practice in the province of Alberta through the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association.
- A minimum of 3 years of related experience.
- You are client and service oriented, have strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to exercise good judgement.
- Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.

My name is Dena and I'm an experienced Australian small animal vet with significant experience across a range of areas including rural and city locations, feline specific, emergency in a referral teaching hospital and shelter environments. I have a significant amount of practice mangement experience including owning my own small animal hospital. I am committed to best practice and understand excellent customer service.
